Surf boards
Modern surf boards can generally be divided into two different
categories: Longboards and shortboards. Longboards are often eight or
more feet long. They are a good choice for beginner surfers because
they are very buoyant and have a lot of planing surface. This makes
it easier for the longboard surfer to catch waves. It is also easier
to paddle and stand up on longboards.
Shortboards are the quicker and more maneuverable surf boards of the
two broad categories. These boards are thinner with a pointed noise
and are generally five to seven feet in length. The smaller size makes
floatation more challenging than with a longboard. Shortboards often
require stronger and more powerful waves.
Surf boards come in many other variations within these two categories,
including guns, fish, and eggs. Funboards are boards between the sizes
of longboards and shortboards, compromising the best qualities of each
length. They are called funboards because they let different surfers
have fun in many different conditions. Other compromises between the
sizes are the mini-mal, which is like a smaller longboard, and the hybrid,
which is more like a larger shortboard.
